Things to do in Woodbridge this June

Whether your interests include local history and Revolutionary-era stories, live music, or simply finding something new to do close to home, June offers a variety of offerings to engage with the people and organizations in our town, and take a look at what makes Woodbridge unique.

As summer begins, there's a full calendar of opportunities to explore Woodbridge and connect with neighbors — from a ceremony honoring previously overlooked members of our community along with student artwork inspired by their story, to a talk about divided loyalties during the Revolution and another month of scheduled shows at 10 Selden, June offers something for a wide range of interests.

Witness Stones dedication honors Chloe and Timothy Anthony

On Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m., the Amity & Woodbridge Historical Society will host a Witness Stones dedication ceremony at the Darling Farmstead and History Museum located at 1907 Litchfield Turnpike.

This free public event will commemorate Chloe and Timothy Anthony, two individuals who were enslaved by the Darling family at the historic Darling House. The Witness Stones Project seeks to restore the history and honor the humanity of enslaved people whose lives and labor helped build communities throughout New England.

The plaque-laying ceremony is part of Woodbridge's America 250 commemorations and will be followed by tours of the Darling Farmstead and History Museum. Residents interested in local history, genealogy, and the ongoing effort to tell a more complete story of the community's past are encouraged to attend. Visit the Amity & Woodbridge Historical Society's website for more information.

Town Library hosts Witness Stones exhibit, and program that explores divided loyalties during the Revolution

The Woodbridge Town Library will feature artwork created by Beecher Road School's 6th graders in response to their Witness Stones studies on colonial Connecticut history and slavery. The exhibit, from June 4-July 13 in the library meeting room, will include paintings, collage, poetry and written texts. As part of this exhibit the Amity & Woodbridge Historical Society will display documents and images of items connected with the family enslaved by the Darlings. The public is invited to the Opening Reception on Thursday, June 4, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Later this month, the Library will also host historian and author Tom Schutt for an in-person presentation, 'Tories, Spies, and Traitors: Divided Loyalty in Revolutionary Connecticut,' on Thursday, June 25, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The program examines the difficult choices faced by Connecticut residents as the American Revolution began. While popular memory often focuses on Patriots, many Connecticut families found themselves divided, with some supporting independence and others remaining loyal to the British Crown. Through stories of soldiers, civilians, spies, and political leaders, the presentation explores how questions of loyalty could affect fortunes, friendships, and even survival. This free program will be held in the library's meeting room and is open to all ages. Visit the Woodbridge Town Library's 'America 250' page for more information.
