Democrats to choose nominee for Governor in August 11 primary
Early voting in Woodbridge begins Aug. 3; unaffiliated voters have until Aug. 10 to enroll in the Democratic Party and participate in the primary
Woodbridge voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 11, to participate in Connecticut's statewide Democratic primary election. Because no Republican primary has been scheduled this year, the Democratic contest will be the only party primary taking place in town. Democrats across Connecticut will be choosing their party's nominee for governor ahead of the November general election.
According to the Woodbridge Registrars of Voters, the gubernatorial contest will be the only race appearing on this year's Democratic primary ballot. Voters will choose between incumbent Governor Ned Lamont and challenger Josh Elliott, a state representative from Hamden (see sample ballot on the town website).
Under Connecticut law, only registered Democrats may vote in a Democratic primary. Voters who were already registered with another political party had to change their party affiliation by May 11 to be eligible to vote in this year's Democratic primary. However, voters who are currently unaffiliated — not enrolled in any political party — may still enroll in the Democratic Party and participate in the August 11 election. The deadline to enroll is 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10.
Registering, switching, or checking your voter status
Residents can check their voter registration status and current party affiliation using the Connecticut Secretary of the State (SOTS)'s online voter lookup tool.
Voters who need to register, update their registration, or enroll in a political party may do so through Connecticut's online voter registration system.
The Woodbridge Registrars of Voters have also scheduled a Voter Enrollment Session on Tuesday, July 28, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Registrar of Voters Office in Town Hall, 11 Meetinghouse Lane. The session is intended to accept voter enrollment registrations and petitions for reinstatement from electors whose registrations have been removed (see notice on the town website).
Early voting and Election Day
Early voting for the Democratic primary will take place at the Center Gym from Monday, August 3, through Sunday, August 9. Early voting hours will be:
- 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4
- 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6
Election Day voting will be held on Tuesday, August 11, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Center Gym. The Registrars of Voters have also announced that electronic poll books will be used during the election (see Registrars' Office page at the town website).
Absentee voting
Voting by absentee ballot is now available to all registered Connecticut voters following a change in state law approved by voters in a 2024 constitutional referendum and implemented this year. Voters no longer need to provide a reason or qualifying excuse to request an absentee ballot for a primary, election, or referendum (see details at the SOTS website).
For the August 11 Democratic primary, the online absentee ballot request portal is already open, and absentee ballots will begin being issued July 21. Voters have until August 10 to request an absentee ballot. Completed ballots must be received by the Town Clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
Voters who wish to vote by absentee ballot may obtain applications from the Woodbridge Town Clerk's Office or through the Connecticut SOTS's Absentee Ballot request online portal. The Town Clerk's Office accepts absentee ballot applications and completed absentee ballots during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition, an absentee ballot drop-off box will again be available in front of Town Hall once these ballots become available.
